Bank Account Opening for Non-Residents

We prepare the file for your account opening with you. The decision to open an account rests with each bank.

Whether an account is opened is the bank’s decision, and each bank has its own rules for customers who do not live in Greece. We do not promise that an account will be opened. We prepare the file with you so that your request reaches the bank complete and clear.

What we take on

We do You do
AFM, if you do not have one Identity and home address details
A document list based on what the bank you choose asks for Tell us why you need an account: property purchase, rent, salary, bills
Translations by certified translators Documents on the origin of the funds, as the bank asks
Filling in the applications and coordinating appointments or contact with the bank Be present or on a video call when the bank asks

The bank decides

Banks are required to check the identity of their customers and the purpose of the account under anti-money-laundering rules. That is why they ask for details that differ from bank to bank, and sometimes from request to request. They may ask you to attend in person. They may also refuse. We do not influence the decision and we do not promise an outcome. We do not name a particular bank as “easy”.

Documents usually asked for

  • A valid passport or ID.
  • An AFM.
  • Proof of address, in Greece or in your country of residence.
  • Details on the origin of the funds and the purpose of the account.
  • Tax residence (for international exchange of tax information).

This is an indicative list, not a promise. Each bank states its own documents, and we rely on that.

An AFM for non-residents

The AFM is issued online and is free, and identity is checked by video call or at the tax office (DOY), according to mitos.gov.gr. It almost always comes before the account. See our page on AFM and Taxisnet.

Working remotely

We do the preparation remotely: documents by photo or scan, translations, online applications. Whether a bank accepts an account opening without a physical visit depends on the bank and on the moment. We ask before you book a trip.

For services that need codes, we never store clients’ passwords. By default we guide you to log in yourself, remotely or at the office with your own phone. Only when needed, the login is done on a secured office computer in a clean private (incognito) session, with you present, and with our lawyer where relevant. Never send passwords or one-time codes to anyone, including us, by email, chat or phone.

Who it makes sense for

Foreigners who buy or rent a home in Corfu, people who work here, owners who receive rent, and people preparing a move, even an application for a digital nomad visa. See also buying property.

Where it usually gets stuck

  • A proof-of-address document that does not match the address on the passport or the application.
  • An AFM that is not finished while the bank appointment is already booked.
  • Questions about the origin of the funds without documents to support them.
  • Documents in a foreign language without an official translation.
  • A request sent to several banks at once, with inconsistencies between the files.

There is no way to avoid every obstacle. A file that was checked before submission cuts down the unnecessary ones.

Time and cost

The bank has its own charges and its own timing, which we cannot predict. Our fee covers preparation and coordination and is agreed before we start.

How to start

Write to us through the contact page or drop in at the office. Tell us why you need an account and where you live now. Our fee is agreed before we start.

Questions about a bank account

Can I open a Greek bank account as a non-resident?

It depends on the bank and on your case. We prepare the file, but we do not promise it will be opened.

Do I need an AFM?

Usually yes, which is why we start there.

Will you find a bank that accepts me?

No. We cannot know in advance what each bank will decide.

Do I need to be there in person?

It depends on the bank. We ask before you book a trip.

Do you give investment or tax advice?

No. For tax matters, a licensed accountant is the right person.

The Corfu Office is a private paperwork office. It is not a government service and not the municipal KEP. We take care of documents, collection and coordination. The competent authority issues the documents and makes the decisions, and we do not promise any outcome. The information on this page is general and is not legal, tax or immigration advice. Legal advice comes from a licensed lawyer, where relevant in cooperation with our partner lawyer, and tax advice from a licensed accountant.
