AMKA (Social Security Number): Issue and Update

We check your documents and prepare the file for your AMKA, for e-EFKA or a KEP. The competent office issues the number.

The AMKA is the number that links you to social security, health care and work in Greece. The competent office issues it, not us, but the hard part is usually the file and the order of steps. Here is what the official register says and where we help.

How an AMKA is issued: what the official register says

According to the National Register of Administrative Procedures (mitos.gov.gr), for adult EU citizens and for adult third-country nationals the application for an AMKA is made at e-EFKA or at a KEP, exclusively in person. Issue is free and the estimated time for the visit is 15 to 30 minutes, not counting waiting. So we cannot issue it remotely for you, and we will not promise that.

Children, beneficiaries of international protection and other special cases have their own pages in the same register, with different documents. If you are in one of those groups, tell us at the start.

Who this service is for

Foreigners who settle or work in Corfu, and people who already have an AMKA but want to find the number or update their details. We work in English and Greek. If you do not live in Greece and do not yet have access to the labour market or a residence permit, we first check whether you are entitled to an AMKA in your case, before we take anything on.

What we do and what you do

We do You do
Find the right category in the register for your situation Tell us your nationality, status in Greece and whether you already have an AFM
Check that the file is complete before you go Send us photos or scans of your documents
Take care of the AFM if it is missing, and of official translations by certified translators Sign what needs signing
Tell you which office (e-EFKA or KEP) and what to bring Go to the office to submit, or give us an authorisation where the office accepts one

Documents: what the register usually asks for

There are other categories (for example beneficiaries of international protection, indirectly insured persons) with their own documents, so we always check the matching page. In the two registers that cover most of our clients (adult EU citizens and adult third-country nationals) you will see:

  • for EU citizens: a valid ID card or passport, original
  • for adult third-country nationals, according to the register page we checked: a valid passport or travel document and a valid residence permit with access to the labour market
  • an AFM certificate for both categories
  • if a representative goes for you: a special power of attorney, with a certified signature for third-country nationals

The AFM comes first, so if you do not have one we start there: see our page on AFM and Taxisnet.

Can someone go for me?

The register allows it with a power of attorney, and for third-country nationals it also asks for a certified signature. What the office accepts on the day can still differ, so we ask first. If you need a power of attorney, see our page on powers of attorney. Notarial powers of attorney are drawn up by a notary, not by our office.

Updating details and finding your number

If you already have an AMKA and changed your surname, identity document or insurance fund, the update goes through the competent office, depending on the case. If you lost the number, the amka.gr portal is the first place we look. We cannot say in advance exactly what will be asked, because the system and procedures change. We check at the source before we tell you.

For services that need codes, we never store clients’ passwords. By default we guide you to log in yourself, remotely or at the office with your own phone. Only when needed, the login is done on a secured office computer in a clean private (incognito) session, with you present, and with our lawyer where relevant. Never send passwords or one-time codes to anyone, including us, by email, chat or phone.

What to have ready before you come

  • Your valid identity document.
  • Your AFM, printed or saved on your phone.
  • Any document in a foreign language, so we can see if a translation is needed.
  • A short note on why you need the AMKA: work, medical care or something else.

Time and cost

The official issue is free according to the register. Our fee covers checking the file and coordination, and it is agreed before we start. As for time, the visit to the office is short when the papers are right. Waiting for an appointment or a queue is not in our hands.

How to start

Write to us through the contact page or drop in at the office. Tell us your nationality and whether you already have an AFM. Our fee is agreed before we start.

Questions about the AMKA

How do I get an AMKA as a foreigner?

Go to e-EFKA or a KEP with the documents for your category. For adults, mitos.gov.gr lists an in-person application and a free issue.

AMKA for non-EU citizens: do I need a residence permit?

For adult third-country nationals the register asks, besides a passport and an AFM, for a valid residence permit with access to the labour market. Other categories have their own documents, and we check them one by one.

Do I need an AFM first?

Yes, an AFM certificate is on the list for both adult categories mentioned above.

Can you get it without me coming?

Only where the office accepts a representative with the right power of attorney. The office issues it, not us.

Are you e-EFKA or a KEP?

No. We are a private office and we do not issue the AMKA.

The Corfu Office is a private paperwork office. It is not a government service and not the municipal KEP. We take care of documents, collection and coordination. The competent authority issues the documents and makes the decisions, and we do not promise any outcome. The information on this page is general and is not legal, tax or immigration advice. Legal advice comes from a licensed lawyer, where relevant in cooperation with our partner lawyer, and tax advice from a licensed accountant.
